Target Practice: BAG Recorder

Beginning recorder players will love this game! Using a Nerf gun, students take turns shooting at the targets. Each target will take them to an 8-beat BAG melody to play. Students can play the melody individually for practice or assessment purposes, or the entire class can play together!

Ready...Aim...FIRE!

It's Easy As Do Re Mi!

This activity was inspired by Cheri Herring's wonderful "Solfege Listening Activity for SMARTboard, which can be found by clicking here.

To download It's Easy As Do Re Mi for Smartboard, click here!

There are four different kids of activities in this file:

1. Three jelly beans each sing a pattern using Mi, Re and Do. Students choose which jelly bean sang the pattern notated at the top of the page.

2. Tap the picture of the child and he/she will sing a pattern. Students choose which of the three patterns notated on the page is the one the child sang.

3. Tap the picture of the child and he/she will sing a pattern. Choose a student to notate the pattern on the music staff.

4. Choose a student to play the pattern notated on the music staff on a barred instrument.

Centers: Name That Tune

I got this idea from Katie Traxler's site.
Students look at a folder that has notes on the music staff. They need to find the following pieces (each cut into laminated strips) and add them to the folder:
- the song title
- the note names
- the lyrics

They may want to find those pieces first and then play, or the may want to play the notes first to help them figure it out!

Again, I used the same scanned music from this book:

After laminating, I cut each song into pieces:
1) the notes on the staff
2) the note names
3) the lyrics
4) the titles
In each folder I glued the notes on the staff, leaving spaces for the note name strips, lyric strips and title strips.

Centers: Boomwhacker Melodies

At this center students play songs on the Boomwhackers. They have a couple of options: they can play the already made songs (see below) or they can make their own songs with coloured circles. A second part this station is Name That Tune.

I have scanned and printed out the boomwhacker songs from this book:

In their group they can choose a song and practice playing it together.

I also have laminated cutouts of circles that match the Boomwhacker colours, each labeled with the appropriate solfege name. Students can lay them out in any order and compose their own Boomwhacker music.

Centers: Dice Music

At the dice music center, students roll the dice (they can roll one die, two, three, etc - it doesn't really matter). They check the key on their worksheet to find out which note name is designated to the number they rolled. In the little heartbeats, they write the letter name (making sure to put a ' or a , beside the C to show that it is high or low C. Once they have rolled all of their note names, they can add a rhythm to their song in the boxes beneath the heartbeats (I just asked for Ta's and Ti-Ti's, but you can always add other rhythms as well). Then they practice playing their final product until they can play it off by heart!

If students are in grades 4 and 5, I have them notate their song on the music staff.
