Halloween Hangover: Rhythm Candies

Sigh. It is one of those years. The kind where Halloween night falls on a school night. I am always trying to think of activities to do "the day after", when the kids are tired but excited and full of sugar. I created a SMARTboard activity for the Grade 1's that I think might hold their attention. In this activity, the kids sort their Halloween candies into bags by matching the word sounds to the rhythms on the bags. I have bigger ideas for this, and will post a new version of the file when it is done, but alas it is time for bed!

"This is a great listening and reading activity to play with grades 2 – 4. Before listening, have students draw and “connect the note dots” on each written pattern so they can see the shape of the melody. Students touch the large ear or character on each page to hear a child sing a solfege pattern then try to identify the written pattern heard. If they are correct, they can touch the second character for a funny comment reward. Some pages have students listen to three choices before identifying the pattern seen. Notice that each pattern is linked to it’s sound for additional game possibilities.
For additional reinforcement, have the students look at the patterns briefly and then write them on staff paper, or use chips or bottle tops on staff paper."

Here are a few of the listening activities in this file:

Lesson flow: There are links to each page and back to the home page for seamless lesson flow. On most pages, there is a funny comment hidden in the choices. The kids love this and can’t wait to hit the jackpot!  This would be a great lesson for a music sub… if you dare miss the fun!!

Favourite Find: Soda Rhythms

Soda Rhythms for the SMART Board

Studens listen to a rhythmic pattern and pull down a "Soda rhythm" to fill each beat box. Students may touch the "hand" to check their work. A correct pattern is rewarded with a funny comment. A PDF file of Soda Can Cards is attached for the teacher to reproduce/laminate for whole class participation. Optional game ideas are included.

This SMARTBoard Activity is a simple Halloween – themed solfege activity. Students touch a pumpkin and the link opens a pumpkin on the fence musical notation example. The pumpkin notes are movable and optional “sol – mi – la” syllables are ready for labeling.
It really is very simple and adaptable for all ages for an interesting little ditty during the music classes during October.

I used this activity with my grade 1/2/3 classes and they loved it. I had them throw a koosh ball at the screen to hit the pumpkins. Excellent assessment pieces as well!

This is a wonderful SMARTboard lesson by Cherie Herring. Students listen to the music when they touch the "package". If the music is ascending they put it in the airplane, and if it is descending, they put it in the train. Later they draw the contour of music they hear!

Five Little Pumpkins for Boomwhackers

I finally finished working on my SMART Board pages for Five Little Pumpkins!

The first page is just a simple page for singing the song. Tap on each "thought" bubble and a picture appears as a hint for what that pumpkin says. At the end of the song, tap a pumpkin and they "roll" out of sight!

The next page is a simple solfege ladder that corresponds with the Boomwhacker colours. Students can do "sight-playing" exercises as the teacher points to the pumpkins. Modify into the Five Little Pumpkins song. It's a good demonstration of how the song goes up and down the scale.

The next four pages are the Five Little Pumpkins song notated in boxes: 4 beats per measure, 4 measures per page. Younger students will have an easier time playing this version, as opposed to the notes on the music staff.

Next is a page just like the previous set, but with empty boxes. Students can drag the pumpkins into the boxes to create their own Boomwhacker songs. If you want them to stick to pentatonic, just tell them which colours are "off limits", or you can delete them altogether!

Next is the song notated (still with colour pumpkins) on the staff for older students. The colours help them out, but they will become more aware of how melodies move up and down on the music staff.

The last page is an empty music staff where students can compose their own Boomwhacker pieces with the coloured pumpkins.
